The best when you teach your children life skills as you are living your life is that it doesn't involve allot of time, you have to live, don't you?
Often you hear that you must spend quality time with your kids and then you must also be perfect at disciplining them, but also be loving. It all might sound a bit difficult to get the balance right, but the key to everything you do is the attitude you do it with and the ability to prioritize.
The most important key to teach children life skills successfully is to approach life with positive energy. Sometimes I would say to my husband "I have a problem", and his reply would be "there are no problems, only solutions." I really appreciate this positiveness about him, because it helps me to realize that things are not as difficult as they sometimes seem. If your children see how you cope with life, they will cope in the same way. Keep in mind that you are teaching them with your example and this will help yo make decisions about the way you deal with life.
This does not mean you have to be afraid to be angry or sad or depressed when you are with your children. In fact, the more of your real life and your real emotions you share with your children, the better they will be able to express their emotions. Your children learn a great deal about how to cope with life's difficulties by watching you deal with them and if it helps to let them into your personal feelings and emotions, they can truly understand.
One thing you should definitely not do is to pretend that the difficulties does not exist. If you try to protect your children from life's difficulties by trying to ignore it and make as if you are not going through anything, they might become adults who are incapable of dealing with problems because they were so sheltered. Don't shield your children from tough situations. If financial problems exist or family problems, it is important to share these with your children. You can't expect them to understand the problems on an adult level and your explanations should take their age into consideration, but all these things can be learning moments.
We tend to protect our children because they are young and we think they should not have to face bad times, but they are more resilient and understanding than we think. It could be that they start to worry when they see something is not quite right and they can build their own horror story of things to come. (My girl even once thought my husband and I were going to split up when we disagreed on something because they rarely see us disagree - and she had some friends at school whose parents split up) Learning the truth about circumstances might be a relieve compared to what they were thinking.
Things to keep in mind while you teach children life skills:
- Be positive: Praise your children for their talents. Keep negative comments to a minimum.
- Read in front of your children: It doesn't matter if you read books, magazines or newspapers. Reading is the important activity.
- Show self-discipline and responsibility: Expect the same from your children.
- Talk to your children.
- Invite your children into your life, even the smallest activities.
- Be a lifelong learner and encourage your children to be too.
- Visit your children's school at least once a year (if they are in a school) and let the teacher know you support what they are learning. Ask questions about the program and your child's progress. Let the teacher know what your child is like.
- Value education: Let your child know that you think learning is important.
- LAUGH TOGETHER: A sense of humor is a great thing to pass along to your children.
