This is shocking:WordPress & Wordfence

Print Friendly

There are millions of new sites showing up every day, most of them running on WordPress (which is awesome), but you must protect your site

WordPress has been downloaded millions of times, I don't want to add a number here, because if you read this post a day from now, the number will be incorrect and you would think that I am lying.

But the shocking part is....

If you look at the number of downloads of WordPress and you look at the number of downloads of Wordfence, they should have been the same.

This is also where I take the chance to congratulate Wordfence with the fact that they reached their over a million downloads.

Why is this so shocking?

When you build a WordPress blog or website, you are open for the public to view your posts, articles or pictures, or whatever you have a site about. And this is awesome, but you are also open for the people to see you who have wrong intentions.

Sadly, although I would love to believe that the world is full of awesome people who live their lives with honest intentions and always wanting the best for other people, this is not the way it is in reality.

Out there, there are people working to find out everything they can that is not right and bad for everyone around them. Sorry if this might sound a bit blunt, but this is the sad truth.

There are scammers, hackers, spammers, etc out there and what they want to do is not with good intent. They don't care if you are struggling or working hard on your website day by day - they just want to hurt you, even though they don't even know you. They also have a nine to five job, but they spend all that precious time to do bad.

How can I say that, if I don't know them?

I've seen it. When you install your WordPress site, you have another option that is to download and install Wordfence. It is a plugin and I would say comes with the installation of your theme, but the shocking part is that Wordfence is not installed as much as WordPress.

My Wordfence is installed and it is so easy to follow the tutorial where they literally take you by the hand and show you every single detail and every option you can choose to let Wordfence work the way you want to. You can even upgrade it and have more protection.

I've set my Wordfence to let me know every time someone tries to log into my WordPress account as well as when someone does log in. Now this is shocking......

..... I regularly get e-mails when someone is thrown out while trying to log into my account with the wrong username, password or whatever reason. The thing is also that when someone is trying to log into my account, they would struggle for hours, and really I mean hours, 2 to 3 hours onwards to try to log in. If I'm not close by where I can do something about it, I just see the e-mails on my phone and don't do anything about it until I can get to my computer, but there is something you can do.

What do you do when this happens?

You log into your account, go to your Wordfence plugin on your left under your dashboard and click on Advanced blocking and immediately block this person's IP address.

What is even more shocking

One day I was busy cleaning the house, as we home workers often do, because we have other things to do besides sitting in front of the computer the entire day.

While I was cleaning, I was thinking about my blog and what to post and so on.... as you regularly do when you have a blog.

When I was finished with my household chores, I sat in front of  my computer, switched it on and first opened my Gmail to see what mail I received...... and there it was....... someone logged into my site at 2h30 and I was not even close to my computer...... scary heh?

My most recent shock

I love Google and the ways that Google tries their best to protect us. Today I received a message from them, "someone else logged into your account that might not be you, please let us know if it was you or not". "If it was not you, please change your password".

Well, needless to say, it was not me. It was someone living in another country and from where I am, if it would have been me, I had to take a plane and fly about 2 days to get there.

What do you do when this happens?

You immediately change your password. Then you can also look at the following way to protect your site:

There are ways to protect your site:

PureVPN services are a simple and very effective method to add a reasonable amount of privacy and security to your Internet usage. It provides a layer of SECURITY and ANONYMITY.

PureVPN has a special where if you take the full year service, it only costs you $4.16 per month, your one year plan being $49.95. This is the  New Years eve special where you get 65% discount, so hurry to get this protection for this low price.

Don't have the $49.95 for a year's subscription, or want to "test the water first?"

Take a look, they have other plans as well, where you can take only a month's subscription.
It's a must-have security tool for Wi-Fi network users, online shoppers, and expats facing internet restrictions.
