There is something that sets people like Will Smith, Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Steve Jobs and George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey and other famous stars apart from the rest of us. Do you know what that is? Want to know How you too can develop Charisma like the stars?
Do you know what it is that makes Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) or the Obamas so engaging to watch? One word: Charisma.
Whether you like their movies, their politics, or their singing, there's no denying that these public figures became as popular as they did because of their undeniable magnetism.
These are all people you want to watch, look up to and listen to.
But again the question, what is it that makes you want to watch them all the time, look up to them and learn from them?
The answer still is charisma.
But what is charisma?
Do you know how to quantify charisma?
More to the point, how can YOU get some charisma for yourself?
Let's break Charisma down
There are different aspects to charisma, but the one that we are going to look at right now in particular is the way you communicate and convey your emotions.
A study found that the more a person gesticulate (gesture) while talking and the more they move around the space they're in, the more we consider them to be charismatic.
Why do you think this is?
The best guess that researchers could come up with is that in behaving this way, you are showing emotional congruence.
In other words, what you are saying and your body language back each other up.
This, in turn, suggests that you really believe in what you're saying and at the same time it makes you more dynamic and engaging to watch.
Also, according to experts, communication is around 70% non-verbal. If you tell someone how passionate you are about your new idea, or if you tell someone how your plans are going to change the world, you really need to not be standing with your arms crossed.
Someone who is truly excited will be moving around and if you're not, then you're going to look like you don't really care about what you're saying.
Storytelling and Charisma
You can clearly see charisma in storytelling. When you hear someone very charismatic tell a story, you will find that they tend to use a lot of dramatic pauses, they'll change voices according to characters in their stories and they'll make things much more dramatic, dynamic and interactive.
They set the scene and they use rhetorical questions.
When they do this, the storyteller helps the listener to really live the experience they're being told.
At the same time, it means that they will be able to feel the emotions that the storyteller is trying to convey.
Although there are lots of ways to tell stories, the truly engaging ones are the ones that contain emotions and not just fact. For that, you must be willing to add a little drama.
How you too can have Charisma
Does this sound complex? Perhaps it sounds like something that doesn't come naturally to you.
I've got great news for you, there is one easy way to help it come naturally - that is to feel passionate about what you do and what you say.
While you're speaking to other people, concentrate on yourself, your body language - the way you act. Your charisma.
Look at yourself in the mirror while you are speaking, as if you're speaking to someone or telling someone a story or something interesting - look at how you convey yourself.
Practice until you feel comfortable and you feel like people will stop and listen when you speak.
